HP pushing Windows 8.1 hybrids

Hewlett-Packard CEO Meg Whitman believes tablet-laptop hybrids will drive consumer holiday sales.

Hewlett-Packard is banking on "convertible" tablets to power its consumer holiday sales, CEO Meg Whitman said Tuesday.

"We've got a lot of convertibles in the market, so do our competitors, and we're advertising behind those because we think that's a really innovative form factor that's the best of the tablet and the best of the PC," she said in response to an analyst's question during the company's earnings conference call.

HP reported better-than-expected earnings on Tuesday.

Whitman said demand won't be known until after the holidays.

"I think it's too early to tell how the demand for convertibles is going whether it's in the commercial space or the consumer space this Christmas season...I think we will know more after we get to the Christmas season on the consumer side," she said.

Though Whitman used the term convertible to generally describe its hybrid devices, the Spectre x2 and Pavilion x2 are technically detachables. That is, the display portion can be detached from the keyboard base and be used as a standalone Windows 8.1 tablet.

Convertibles, like HP's EliteBook Revolve, generally have touch displays that remain attached but can swivel.

Specs are pretty impressive for the Spectre x2. It sports a 13.3-inch 1,920x1,080 display, a 128GB solid-state drive, Intel HD 4200 graphics, USB 3.0 and HDMI ports, and an extra battery in the keyboard base for up to 9 hours of combined battery life, HP says.

And it's one of the first fanless products to use a mainstream Intel Core processor. In this case, a Core i5 4202Y processor, Intel's most power efficient mainstream Core chip. Typically, all laptops powered by Core i3, i5, or i7 processors require a fan to keep the chip cool.

At the Microsoft Store, it's priced at $999.

iPhone 6: Release date, rumours, features and news

With the iPhone 5S hype out of the way, what might the iPhone 6 have in store?

The iPhone 5S has had its ‘coming out’ party, with Apple unveiling its most forward-thinking phone yet. It’s got a fingerprint sensor for added security and convenience, a retooled camera module, new colour scheme and its most advanced processor yet.

From what we've seen thus far, the 5S is looking like more than a match for the current crop of high-end Android phones out there, thanks to the added benefits of iOS 7 and some great looking iPhone 5s apps. Just check out our iPhone 5s vs. Samsung Galaxy S4 to see how it stacks up against the competition.

However, as is always the case with Apple, the world is already wondering what comes next? What will the iPhone 6 – expected to be a much more expansive update – bring to the table?

iPhone 6 release date

Unless Apple dramatically changes course from its release schedule, we’re unlikely to see the iPhone 6 arrive on the scene until September 2014. However, it has been whispered that the company will launch a larger iPhone 6 as a companion to the iPhone 5S. In that case, we would be looking at a release date perhaps prior Samsung’s May/June new Galaxy window.

Apple iPhone 6 screen size

Recent reports from the Wall Street Journal have indicated that Apple is experimenting with screens ranging from 4.5- to 6-inches. Apple had to be dragged kicking and screaming from its classic 3.5-inch handset to the iPhone 5 and 5S’ 5-inch screen, but speculation suggests it is willing to push closer to the 5-inch screens offered by some of its Android rivals.

According to MacRumors, one analyst has suggested that Apple could be looking to implement a 4.8-inch Retina+ IGZO screen made by Sharp, which will make the iPhone 6 display thinner, brighter and much clearer – boasting better than HD resolutions.

Apple iPhone 6 storage

In the build up to the iPhone 5S launch analysts predicted the company would boost the storage of the device to 128GB, up from the top-end 64GB handset. That speculation will now carry over to the iPhone 6. That would tie in with the recent addition of a 128GB iPad model. Why couldn’t Apple employ the same tech here?

Apple iPhone 6 specs

In the build up to the iPhone 5S launch event, an Apple patent was uncovered for a fingerprint sensor that integrated Near Field Communications technology, enabling wireless payments, data transfers, media playback and more. The NFC chip was a no show. Might it be integrated within the iPhone 6?

The iPhone 5S also saw a brand new A7 processor, that’s 40 per cent faster than the A6 and a new M7 motion co-processor that tracks the users movement. We’d expect this tech to evolve in the iPhone 6 handset. Apple is yet to launch a quad-core handset. Will 2014 see it make the jump?

The device’s camera also just got a pretty significant update thanks to a 15 per cent larger sensor and a dual LED flash. There’s also new software features TrueTone flash firing, Burst Mode and slow motion video. We can only envision Apple will further hone this tech within the iPhone 6. Will we see a 13-megapixel sensor to replace the 8-megapixel snapper on the iPhone 5 and 5S?

Naturally, there’ll be the latest Wi-Fi, 4G and Bluetooth technologies.

Apple iPhone 6 appearance

Apple's iPhone 6 may have a curved, wraparound screen, according to a recent Apple patent filing. The patent shows off an iPhone design with a wraparound AMOLED screen, which appears to be similar in design to the fourth generation iPod Nano, has gained particular attention.

According to the patent the screen can be 'unrolled' or 'unfolded' thanks to a hinge or unfolding mechanism allowing the screen area to be almost doubled in size. Facial-recognition, gesture control and the layering of screens to create a 3D display were also described in the patent.

Apple iPhone 6 features

A new feature that could well appear on the 6th generation iPhone is the use of sonar as a replacement to the current infared sensors which use sound as a proximity sensor – according to this report in Apple Insider – letting the phone detect where it is, either as a way of alerting the user about an incoming object, or as a way of detecting whether the phone is being held to the users ear.

One of the intriguing features to appear on several rumour feeds is the introduction of a “smart bezel” which would display information around the screen. It emerged from an actual patent that Apple filed and, according to Macworld, the smart bezel could be a place for flashing buttons and symbols that compliment the on-screen action.

The patent states: "The primary display could be used to convey visual content to a user, and the secondary display could be used to guide a user providing inputs to the device. For example, the secondary display could be selectively illuminated to provide one or more indicators that represent where or how a user can provide inputs to the device."

Apple iPhone 6 Operating System

Unless Apple breaks from tradition and launches an iPhone 6 in the middle of the iPhone 5S release cycle, it seems that the iPhone 6 will arrive with iOS 8 out of the box. With iOS 7 bringing a much-needed visual overhaul for Apple’s mobile software, it seems unlikely that Apple will be reinventing the wheel again so soon.

Google Android KitKat

The stated goal of the next version of Google’s Android operating system—4.4 “KitKat”—is “to make an amazing Android experience available for everybody.”

What does that mean? It is odd and cryptic … and the only thing we officially know about what Google is going to do with KitKat. If we piece together some of the rumors swirling around what Android 4.4 will entail and combine it with what we know about how Google has been updating Android and its pertinent features over the last year, we get a pretty good idea.

It leads us to a new Android experience. What some people are calling “the Google Experience.”

Waiting For The Big Android Update

Android 4.4 KitKat is expected to be announced by the end of October. The hype cycle is beginning to hit full tilt as stream of leaks and rumors illuminate what Google will unveil the next version of Android and the flagship smartphone that will accompany it, the Nexus 5.

KitKat will be the first new named version of Android in more than a year since Jelly Bean 4.1 was introduced at Google’s I/O developer conference in the spring of 2012. Google has offered up two updates to Android since then—versions 4.2 and 4.3—that have both been rolled up in the Jelly Bean moniker. Now that Google is almost ready to unveil the “K” desert version of Android (Google normally names each new version of the operating system after sweet treats in alphabetical order), users, developers, manufacturers and consumers are expecting a lot.

The last two versions of Jelly Bean haven’t given us a ton to be excited about. The biggest feature in version 4.3 was the integration of Bluetooth Low Energy to the Android hardware specification along with OpenGL for Embedded Systems. These are good updates for app developers out there but leave much to be desired for users that are looking for a fresh coat of paint and improved user experience.

The Google Experience

In that vein, the rumor mill points towards a major feature that will change some of the fundamental usability of Android: the “Google Experience.”

Source: Android Police
The Google Experience Launcher is rumored to be a hub launcher for Google apps and widgets on Android devices. Google Experience will be a form of launcher within Android that will not be tied specifically to version 4.4 KitKat but will rather be an app through the Google Play app store that will be compatible with devices running Android back to version 2.2 Froyo.

A launcher is also known in general terms as a “skin” but the terms are not mutually exclusive. The Google Experience Launcher is rumored by the blog Android Police to be a widget that live on the Android homescreen in which Google features like Search and Google Now are heavily integrated, can read the data within the widget and update itself. A launcher would also control aspects such as app folders and homescreens (which are rumored to be infinite instead of limited to five as they are in current builds of Android).

What would Google Experience mean for Android users? Speculation is that KitKat 4.4 will enable support for lower-end Android devices. Google Experience would likely be the vehicle for that.

If you have been following the evolution of Android as an operating system, you will note that the Google has made some pretty significant changes to how Android works on a smartphone. In the past, Google used to tie almost all of the functionality of its own apps to the Android kernel. That meant developers and consumers would need a certain version of Android to get new features. Wanted the latest update to the Google Play app store (formerly Android Market)? You needed to update your Android software. How about the latest APIs and user interface in Google Maps and Navigation? Update Android. Gmail, Calendar, Talk (now Hangouts) or any other Google service? It was tied to the Android kernel.

Google changed all of that with the release of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, decoupling its own apps from the Android operating system. Instead of being tied to Android, features and APIs like Maps either stand alone as their own apps that live in the Google Play store and/or are tied to what is called Google Play Services.

Google Experience As A Front-End Extension Of Google Play Services

Google Play Services is what is known in the computing world as a “shim.” Here is the definition of a shim, from Wikipedia:

In computer programming, a shim (from shim) or shiv is a small library that transparently intercepts an API and changes the parameters passed, handles the operation itself, or redirects the operation elsewhere. Shims typically come about when the behavior of an API changes, thereby causing compatibility issues for older applications which still rely on the older functionality. In such cases, the older API can still be supported by a thin compatibility layer on top of the newer code. Web polyfills are a related concept. Shims can also be used for running programs on different software platforms than they were developed for.
In Android, Google Play Services is a stand-alone app that runs in the background. It updates itself with functionality directly from Google without the user doing anything. It downloads its own code and enacts its own functionality. For example, if there is an update to the Google Play Store or Maps, it is downloaded and implemented through Google Play Services.

If the Google Experience is really going to be a primary feature in KitKat 4.4, as the rumors say it will, then what Google is doing is giving Google Play Services a front-end user interface for Android devices.

By extension, the Google Experience can be transported back to older versions of Android. If we look at the definition of a shim in that, “the older API can still be supported by a thin compatibility layer on top of the new code” then it is possible for Google to bring just about all of the Android features and functionality that are not explicitly tied to hardware back to any phone running a previous version of Android.

Amazon + Htc = new android smartphone

Report: Amazon and HTC team up to build smartphones, risk ire of Google
HTC risks expulsion from the Android Open Handset Alliance over Android fork.

The Kindle Fire HD.
Amazon
The Financial Times is reporting that Amazon and HTC are teaming up to develop a "range" of smartphones. The timeline is fuzzy at this point, with the report saying that the devices are unlikely to launch this year. Despite one phone supposedly being "at an advanced stage of development," The Financial Times says that Amazon might not release the device at all.

Still, if the report pans out, this will be the second time HTC has helped a company jump into the smartphone market. It previously built the HTC First, the flagship phone for the launch of Facebook Home, an Android home replacement. The smartphone company is surely hoping its fortunes will be better this time, as the "Facebook Phone" was a massive flop, selling only 15,000 units.

But the huge difference between the two initiatives is that the HTC First was an Android device and shipped with the Google Apps. Presumably, the Amazon phone would run a version of the Kindle OS, an Android fork that ships without the Play Store and the rest of Google's apps.

An HTC partnership with Amazon would be extremely surprising. Building a device that runs a fork of Android is something that HTC is expressly forbidden from doing as per its membership in the Open Handset Alliance (OHA), Google's cabal of Android Google app licensees. Members get access to the Play Store, Gmail, Google Maps, and all the other Google apps for Android. OHA members commit to building one Android platform—Google's platform—and not shipping devices that run forks of Android.

We saw Google's response to a situation like this before when Acer tried to ship a device running a non-Google-approved version of Android—Alibaba's Aliyun OS. When Google got wind of it, Acer was told to shut the project down or lose its access to Google Apps. Google even made a whole blog post about the ordeal, saying:

While Android remains free for anyone to use as they would like, only Android compatible devices benefit from the full Android ecosystem. By joining the Open Handset Alliance, each member contributes to and builds one Android platform—not a bunch of incompatible versions.
Historically, it appears that shipping one non-Google device will get you kicked out of the Google ecosystem. So if Amazon's phone makes it to market and doesn't run a Google-approved version of Android, HTC could be banned from future access to Google apps.

Google's grip over the entire smartphone ecosystem is why none of the usual names build Amazon's Kindle Fire line of tablets. OHA members can't ship Android forks, meaning Acer, Asus, Dell, Foxconn, Fujitsu, HTC, Huawei, Kyocera, Lenovo, LG, Motorola, NEC, Samsung, Sharp, Sony, Toshiba, and ZTE have not built any Amazon devices. This leaves the Kindle Fires in the hands of Quanta Computer, a company primarily known for making laptops.

While the plans clearly aren't concrete at this point, HTC and Amazon would need to figure out how to ship these devices without getting HTC expelled from Google's Android ecosystem. Amazon's devices are meant to encourage users to use Amazon's services; it's hard to imagine the company shipping an Android device full of competing services from Google, but that's what HTC's OHA membership requires. We'll be eagerly awaiting Google's response to all this with a bowl of popcorn at the ready.

If Google's level of control over a seemingly open source project is news to you, the rabbit hole goes much deeper. We'll be addressing just how hard life outside of the Google ecosystem is in a feature due out early next week.

Flickr previews

Flickr previews new design for photo pages, gives pictures room to breathe

If you often find yourself digging for larger photo sizes while browsing Flickr, Yahoo's just outed a new beta design for image pages that should strike your fancy. With the new look, a 25-percent larger picture fills the left side of a page, while its description, comments, meta information and more take residence on a right-hand rail. Yahoo's also made things snappier as well, promising a speed boost when loading the next image -- which can now be done by clicking the current photo. Marissa Mayer and Co. say that this is an early version of the revamp, however, and that not all features have been included. To preview the fresh layout, just navigate to a photo and hit the "Try Our New Photo Experience" button, which seems to have been knocking about browsers for a few days. Holdouts, however, will see the partial redesign roll out en masse later this year.

Microsoft releases three new IT and enterprise Windows 8 apps

Microsoft releases three new IT and enterprise Windows 8 apps

While Microsoft spends a lot of time promoting its consumer oriented Bing apps for Windows 8, the company has also released a number of Modern apps for the OS meant for enterprise and IT users that perhaps don't get as much attention. In the past couple of weeks, the company has launched three new apps for those customers in the Windows Store.

One of those new app releases is Microsoft Dynamics CRM, which requires a link to a PC running Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2013. Microsoft's notes for the app claim that it will help business customers stay on top of their operations while on the go, by tracking sales performance of products with charts and graphics, calling up customer data and listing any contacts and leads from the dashboard. The app also supports pinning specific information to the Windows 8 Start screen.

Another new app, made more for IT workers, is Lync 2013 PreCall Diagnostics, which requires a Lync account. This app lets users check out the current state of their network to make sure that a Lync call or meeting can go through. They can run a test in On Demand mode to check out the network's performance for a longer period of time. The app offers graphics to show the status of a Lync network with indicators that show things like Network MOS, Packet Loss and Interarrival Jitter.

Finally, IT workers who want to sit back and learn more about Microsoft's products can check out the TechNet Edge Show app for Windows 8. The app allows users to access the weekly web video show which offers technical tutorials and information on software like Windows Server, Windows Azure, System Center, Hybrid Cloud, and People Centric IT.

User feedback

A CASE STUDY
How Your Product Can Benefit From User Feedback.

Like many great ideas, ours was born of a problem. When I was a graduate student at MIT, I sat next to a classmate who is visually impaired. He would whisper to me to ask the time, even though he wore a watch — which prompted me to wonder how the blind tell time.

I later learned from my classmate that he had a talking watch that announced the time out loud when he pressed a button, but he rarely used it in public because he found it disruptive and embarrassing. After that conversation with my classmate, I went home and Googled "watch for the blind". I couldn’t believe what I saw.

Facebook Search

Facebook Search now includes your status, check-ins, posts. Graph Search adds more content to what one can search, increasing its usefulness for businesses to keep tabs on what people are saying.
Seems like this went under the radar... While search on Facebook was enabled earlier this year, this week the social media network expanded its search feature by including posts, comments, captions, check-ins, and status updates. It's not activated for everyone yet, but you may want to review your privacy settings to remind yourself of exactly what you want visible by friends and the public.
Previously I wrote about how businesses can prepare for Graph Search. With the ability now to search posts made at certain locations or about different topics, it's even easier for businesses to get an understanding of what people are saying about them on Facebook.
For example, to "listen in" on what people are saying at my restaurant, I can search:

- "Posts about Standing Sushi Bar"

- "Posts written at Standing Sushi Bar"

- "Photos taken at Standing Sushi Bar"

...and on, and on.

Let's see if anyone can build a tool to make monitoring this information easier.

Cosa sta succedendo in internet ?
